Come dine with me........

Neil and I have always been 'foodies'. We like eating food 😁 and we like cooking and baking. I used to buy a couple of food magazines a month, but at the moment, while Neil is not working, I have decided to stop doing that. Most information is on line anyway so I can take a look there. We both quite like cookery programmes too. I love watching The Great British Bake-Off and we both watch Sunday Morning Brunch, and Jamie and Jimmy's Friday Night Feast. I've recently become a fan of Come Dine With Me, so with all this you would think we are the world's best at cooking? Hmmm well maybe not. I've certainly had a few disasters and one in particular that Neil will bring up now and again.......tuna pasta bake. Now, I like tuna and pasta and cheese, and I even like tuna melt (tuna and melted cheese, on toast) but apparently this was 'gross' although Neil put it more politely! I've made macaroni cheese that is more like a brick (not enough sauce I suspect?) and some cakes that have been flat as a pancake. I think my imagination is sometimes better than the reality? Since Neil has been off work he has taken to preparing dinner on the days that I work, which is lovely. We used to share the job of cooking, and prep dinner together sometimes, or take it in turns. It depended on what we felt like as to what we ate. Now I let Neil choose what we eat, especially as he tends to cook it. Tonight we had Moroccan lamb with lemon rice, and delicious it was too.

When it comes to the Sunday roast, ah well it's me that cooks it. We always had a roast dinner when the boys were young and simply carried on cooking it for ourselves, though in the summer it tends to be a variation with new potatoes. Sundays are our day to chill, and we try to do as little as possible unless it's leisure orientated. To be honest after the dinner all we want to do is veg out on sofa!

So what makes a good old British Sunday roast dinner?

Well you have to have meat, and definitely roast potatoes, oh and vegetables and gravy. Some people have stuffing, and some have Yorkshire puddings whatever the chosen meat. We tend to have chicken, or pork but if we are feeling flush it can be beef or lamb. We also have a good variety of vegetables because I'm usually trying to make sure we get some healthy bit in the meal! I love a good roast. I think it's a true British traditional meal but one that seems to be going out of fashion, sadly. What I do know is that both my sons reminisce about the roast dinners we used to have as a family, and it is still the meal they ask for if they come round to eat. So I must cook it okay! Phew!

The trouble is that I like all food, and so does Neil. It's a bit of joy in our sometimes mundane life and part of the challenge is to see how many different dishes you can make with mince beef, for example. Little things........😂 I suspect the delight of good food with good company is why dinner parties were so popular years ago. So, if we did 'Come Dine with Me' would we cook a roast dinner? Actually no, because that's sacred to Sundays for us, but Neil and I did come up with a menu, and we have joked with our sons that we will have a competition at some point between us all. I haven't a clue what the 'prize' will be but I'm sure we will come up with something. So what's our menu? Well the starter would be Garlic and White Wine Prawns, the main would be Beef Olives with mashed potato or crusty bread, and to end it would be a trio of desserts....for example a dark chocolate mousse, raspberry eton mess and vanilla panna cotta. Until I get to practice it I better stick to baking Neil's favourite cake, a Coffee and Walnut sponge.
