I promise I am not having a pop at vegan food but why oh why are some of them labeled like meat? For example vegan sausages, vegan bacon. I am perplexed.
They are not meat so why label them to suggest they are. Veganism is a total way of life. The vegan society states that Veganism is 'a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the
development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.”
It has become a very popular way of life, and I admire anyone that manages to live by those ideals. I do eat meat, but I try to make sure it responsibly sourced and that I know where that source is and I try to be balanced and know about the food I am eating. Eating lots of vegetables and fruit means I personally would not think to label them as anything other than what they are. I have noticed that there is a culture of moving away from calling vegan and vegetarian foods 'meat substitutes'. I mean why call a food 'fishless fillets'? If you are vegan you wont be eating fish anyway. If it's in the vegan section of the supermarket then it will not have any animal products in that food. Fish is an 'animal' product. What about this, from a rather well known large supermarket chain, 'Meat free vegetable and chicken style pies'. Would someone please tell me what 'chicken style' is? Is not a chicken, erm, a chicken? Quite frankly I think that sort of labelling is daft, so it's a good job I'm not in the marketing for vegan food.
I have noticed that the trend is moving away from a meat type of description now. Many more vegan foods are being labelled as 'plant based'. A far more sensible and clear statement of what the food is. It immediately let's you know what the food is all about and enables you to make a more informed choice about what you are eating. Put the word 'sausage' in a description, and the majority of people would think of a meat based food however much the advertiser describes it.
So my plea to manufacturers is describe the vegan food as it is. Be honest. Do not label it the same as a meat food, because it is not meat. Make a clear label and tell the truth. Then we can all decide for ourselves what we want to eat.
Here is the definition of 'Sausage' from the Oxford English dictionary -
