Today is a day I never thought I would see. Another one marked on my calendar as 'didn't think it would come'. We can vote for an MEP, a Member of the EU Parliament.
When the government held a vote on whether to exit the EU I think almost everyone thought that would be it. The vote was marginal but proven, most people wanted us to leave so we were going to leave. The utter mess we are now in is down to a lack of agreement on the part of our parliamentary MP's. I blame no-one but the MPs. Not Theresa May, because I believe that, despite a serious lack of support and total lack of judgement by her advisers, she has done her best to get a deal with the EU. It was never going to be easy. The EU do not want us to leave, and so it was obvious they would put as many stepping stones in place as possible to slow or stop the process. They were never going to agree to everything we wanted, and in the end they have decided enough is enough and what they have offered is it. No more negotiating as it's a waste of time. Their time and ours. We have a deadline date of October 31st, and what happens on that date is anyone's guess. Quite frankly I wish we would just leave. Leave with no deal, and then our country will be able to get on with business. It would shock the EU and get the ball moving.
Our country is resilient. It is admired, or at least was until this Brexit mess showed how divided we are. But that doesn't detract from the fact that many other countries want to trade with us because we are a good investment with a proven track record, whether in or out of the EU. In fact the EU have a lot of investment in our country and it would be difficult for them to extradite themselves from a lot of it. They don't want their economies to collapse, as well they may do if we withdraw our own investments and businesses and visa versa. So it's a stalemate, a standoff. Who will blink first? Theresa May needs to be strong. She is in a precarious position today as many of her own government want her to step down. She is under immense pressure. Who they expect to stand in her place and do a better job I have no idea? Whoever it will be, and sadly it will happen because she is being shunted out right now, will have to take over what she has already negotiated. Do they really think that the EU will budge for another person? I think not. They will just shake their heads and say, actually this is it. We have told you. We will not budge and no new person is going to change our minds. I have no idea what the Conservative Party seek to gain by getting rid of her, but they are in danger of seriously alienating the people of this country. Same with the Labour Party which has shown it self to be equally divided. Two major political parties bickering, and breaking our country apart.
So I think today will be another close run, just like the EU Referendum. People will vote to prove a point. No-one expected to be in this ludicrous position of voting for MEPs that may be only in name if the EU have anything to do with it, and will sit for a very short time. The cost is ridiculous, and the lack of stability is destroying the confidence of the people, and our businesses. Today will probably show that we are still a divided country. Split down the middle, but I believe everyone wants us to get out of this stalemate as soon as possible, whatever the outcome. I will just suggest to the government that I think we will see riots on the street if the result of the EU referendum is not fulfilled. The people who voted to leave will not tolerate a change in direction from what is the result of a democratic vote, however anyone wants to explain it away. I also think that, in spite of what some media say, people have not changed their minds and want us to stay. In fact people want us to just get on with it.
I could be proven wrong. The result of today's vote may be be completely different to what I have suggested, but I don't think so. It will be a split vote again. But I do think the Brexit Party will do well, in spite of not having a manifesto yet. We will see. Watch this space...……
